In late July, we officially opened the doors to VXT’s brand-new office in Christchurch, New Zealand!
To celebrate we hosted a launch party with our teammates, friends, some of our closest partners and even a surprise flight from the US for one lucky attendee.
This wasn’t just an opening party though, it was also a chance to reflect on the journey, as well as the team and customers who’ve been with us from day one and helped make VXT what it is today (hint: the best phone system for lawyers!).
VXT’s journey to Hereford Street
Walking into our new home on Hereford Street for the launch party felt surreal. What started as two students at the University of Canterbury Centre for Entrepreneurship (UCE) building a tool to make voicemail less painful, has grown into a company serving more than 1000 law firms who’ve made more than 10 million phone calls with VXT.
VXT co-founder Luke Campbell made a presentation at the launch that gave everyone insight into the transformation of VXT as a product. He shared how the company has evolved to become the only phone system built for law firms, with deep legal integrations into platforms like Clio, Actionstep, MyCase, Smokeball, and more.
VXT captures billable time automatically, and turns conversations into complete file notes and accurate records that can be saved straight to a firm’s legal software. Those small wins compound into hundreds of hours saved each month. On average, VXT saves law firms over $50,000 of time per lawyer per year.
In the past four years we’ve gone from zero users to well on our way to more than 5,500 users. From those first calls to the 200,000+ handled every week now, it’s been a journey of constant learning, iteration, and listening to our customers.
So how did we get here? Let’s take a trip down memory lane.
UCE: The early days

- Team size: 10 (starting from 2)
- Customers: 0 law firms (March 2021)
- Calls per week: Practically none – just a vision
VXT started at UCE at the University of Canterbury as an idea between co-founders Luke Campbell and Lucy Turner and slowly grew to a team of 10 (mostly made up of fellow UC students). We were hustling back then, often worked Sundays, and shared space with younger, louder students who would come and go. Eventually, we became part of the furniture there.
Our product started as a visual voicemail tool. It was useful, but not yet a big solution. After more than 100 interviews with lawyers, we discovered the real pain point was call-related paperwork. So in March 2021, it became our mission to work on something that could completely remove paperwork for lawyers.
Durham Street: Scaling up

- Team Size: 19 (adding global members in the Philippines, Australia & UK)
- Customers: 47 law firms (April 2022)
- Calls per Week: Tens of thousands.
Leaving UCE was like stepping into legitimacy (we probably overstayed our welcome!). We had launched VXT as a VoIP phone system and could sense this was the foundation for a product and culture that could scale.
Entering our office in Durham Street was when VXT started to feel like a “real company.” By April 2022, we’d grown from 0 to nearly 50 law firms using VXT, proving that we were onto a product law firms actually wanted.
Over the next two years we began serving law firms globally, welcomed our first remote hires, and nearly doubled the team. It was a good problem to have, but by mid-2024 we were outgrowing the space!
Hereford Street: A new era

- Team Size: 25 (and counting)
- Customers: 1000+ law firms (June 2025)
- Calls per Week: 200,000+
Now, with a team of 25 and growing, the Hereford Street office means we no longer need to breathe down each other’s necks to work.
The new office doesn’t just give us more space to work together. It’s also a symbol of the next chapter, becoming a hub where we can collaborate, host customers, and continue scaling.
In just 18 months, VXT has grown 400% and now supports over 5,500 users across 1000 law firms worldwide. Together, our customers have handled more than 10 million calls through VXT.
Partners and community
The room on launch night was full of people who have helped shape VXT’s story. From the OneLaw team to Mark Greenslade at Verlata and members of the Christchurch legal community, their support has been instrumental in getting us here.
Flying friends in from around the world

One of the highlights of the launch was welcoming some of our earliest and most loyal customers in person:
- Alistair Van Schalkwyk from ASCO Legal, our second-ever customer, joined us from Auckland.
- Joshua Reimer from Johnstone and Reimer Lawyers flew in from Melbourne.
- Laura Vickers of Nest Legal also made the trip from Melbourne.
- Ryann Harmless, our office competition winner, joined us all the way from Indianapolis, USA.
Having them all in one room, sharing stories and meeting the team, was a pinch-me moment.

The group also spent the week exploring Christchurch with the team.
From walking Godley Head at sunrise, to sharing dinner as a team, to making a trip to the Antarctic Centre, we certainly made the most of our time together marking the occasion.
Ryann had this to say on her time with VXT in NZ:
“[I] had the most amazing time with wonderful people and got to see some of the most beautiful places in the world [in NZ].
“I can’t wait to see everyone from VXT in Boston for Clio Cloud and to start planning my next NZ trip.”

Home sweet home
The launch party wasn’t just about celebrating a new office. It was about celebrating VXT’s journey, our incredible customers and partners, and the team that makes it all happen.
As we grow (we’re hiring – join us!), we remain a global company with roots firmly planted in Christchurch. This city is part of our story, where we’ve come from and where we’ll always belong.
With the Hereford Street office as our new base, we’ve finished one chapter and started the next. But one thing’s clear: this is just the beginning.
